CHAPTER 26

Prender

Prender found himself somewhat pleased when Janet Smith arrived at the main complex. While he would never divulge his feelings to anyone, for fear of suffering Lord Vestin’s wrath, Prender was rather fond of the way Miss Smith talked to his Lord. She said many things Prender wished he could but never dared. Prender was wise enough to pretend her words were shameful whenever he was near Vestin.

Fortunately, Prender was not directly under the influence of Lord Vestin’s venom. That allowed him to have dissenting thoughts all he wanted without fear of messing his pants. He’d just learned it was best to not speak his feelings aloud.

“It’s a pleasure to see you, Miss Smith,” he said with a bow.

“It is?” she replied, giving him the once-over. “Okay, Prender, if you say so.”

It was nice that she hadn’t called him names, not that she was above it. Maybe her reactions came as simple responses to the way she was treated. It was certainly possible. Did Prender not respond in kind to poor treatment? Actually, generally, he did not. He wasn’t one who enjoyed confrontation, so he merely took abuse where necessary and sought the nearest exit.

They walked up to Lord Vestin’s office and stepped inside.

“Ah, if it isn’t our lovely Janet Smith,” Vestin said in such a way as to make clear it wasn’t genuine. He appeared to have something weighing on him, too, but Prender assumed it was simply the pressure of the upcoming war. “How wonderful of you to visit.”

“I’m sure it is, sphincter fangs,” she said. She then pulled out a file from her bag and dropped it on his desk. “Twenty-five hundred names are listed right there, and each of them has been given an injection.” She tapped on the folder to drive the point home. “We took over a bunch of abandoned buildings and I hired people to stand outside and steer away the PPD, should they arrive to check things out. You’ll be billed for that soon.”

Vestin appeared more than pleased. “My army has grown to over two thousand people?”

“Twenty-five hundred, shaft-itcher,” she amended, “not including the riff-raff you’ve got here, obviously.”

It was rare to see his Lord in such a state of glee. If Vestin could dance, Prender imagined he would’ve done just that.

“This is perfect,” said Vestin, “not to mention timely. We have a new struggle to contend with, but that’s nothing new.” He then sprung up from his chair and rushed toward the door. “Prender, tell Emiliano to gather the troops in the compound. I shall address them as night falls!”

“Of course, My Lord,” Prender replied with a bow, though it was wasted since Vestin had already rushed from the room.

When he looked back up, he noticed that Miss Smith was studying him again.

“I thought you were his second-in-command.”

“I’ve been promoted to being Lord Vestin’s manservant.”

“Promoted?” She laughed. “I think the word you’re looking for is ‘demoted,’ Prender.”

“I suppose it depends on one’s perspective, Ma’am,” Prender replied, not at all bothered by her quip.
